Problems are constantly appearing on planet earth. When the world is hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, it seems that the problem of climate change is getting worse.
Not a few countries and scientists are starting to again warn about this diverted problem. Last week, China, which has been considered to be the root cause of the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic and also the largest emitter of carbon, actually began to be more vigilant about the issue of climate change.
The Chinese envoy said it would release the latest plan for reducing carbon emissions in the near future, ahead of the global United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland in November 2021.
"In the near future the relevant policy papers will be out there, there will be a detailed implementation plan," Xie Zhenhua said in an online webinar hosted by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
"Then we will talk about that support for the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow," he added.
The COP26 meeting is an important step to get countries in the world to agree on the types of carbon emission reductions to prevent catastrophic climate change.
Under the Paris Agreement, countries are intended to submit updated 2030 climate targets before COP26. But nearly half have not, including major global emitters such as China and India.
The United Nations is pushing for a global coalition committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 that will include all countries. China has said it will aim for carbon neutrality by 2060.
The 2015 Paris Agreement adopted a collective pledge to limit the rise in the planet's surface temperature to "well below" two degrees Celsius and the aspiration limit to 1.5 degrees.
Previously, China was reluctant to commit to the Paris Agreement. The Bamboo Curtain Country believes industrialized countries, especially in the West, could get rich before carbon reduction controls are passed.
The threat of climate change is becoming more and more real. Previously, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani had also warned of this, even the President of the United States, Joe Biden, had also warned about the potential for Jakarta to sink in 10 years due to rising sea levels.
