Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that the tech giant will move from a social media company to a metaverse company.
It aims to combine the real and virtual worlds or what is called the "internet made real".
But considering that nearly three billion people on earth now use Facebook every month, Zuckerberg's advice on the Metaverse is worth heeding. The term "metaverse" is not new.
The Metaverse is an alternative digital reality where people work, play and socialize. It can also be called mirror world, AR cloud, magic verse, spatial internet, or live maps.
Launching New Scientist, the word metaverse is a combination of two words from the prefix "meta" which means outside and "universe" or the universe.
The term is usually used to describe the concept of future internet interaction, which consists of a persistent and shared 3D virtual space then connected to a perceived virtual world.
Academics have been writing about a similar idea under the name "extended reality" for years, but it's a rather boring-sounding name.
"Metaverse", created by science fiction writer Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel "Snow Crash,".
Authors have a habit of recognizing trends with names like "Cyberspace" from William Gibson's 1982 book; "robot" comes from Karel Apek's 1920 play.
Recent neologisms such as "cloud" or "Internet of Things" have stuck with us, precisely because they are practical ways of referring to technologies that are becoming increasingly important. Metaverse sits in the same category.
