Palestine Rejects Israeli Supreme Court's Offer on Conflict in Sheikh Jarrah

Palestinians threatened with expulsion in East Jerusalem have rejected an Israeli Supreme Court offer that they could rent their homes from a Jewish settlement organization. In the case that sparked the Israeli-Palestinian conflict earlier this year, Israel's top court proposed a compromise to end a lengthy legal row.

Israel's Supreme Court suggested the four Palestinian families could stay in Sheikh Jarrah if they recognized their land as belonging to a Jewish settlement company, but they rejected this.

Protected tenants' Under the court's plan, Palestinians - among dozens of families at risk of eviction - will remain "protected tenants". They cannot be expelled in the future, as long as they pay rent to the Jewish organization that claims to own the land. However, Palestinians say they want recognition of their rights to the property. "They put a lot of pressure on us to reach an agreement with Israeli settlers, where we would rent from a settler organization," said Muhammad el-Kurd, from one of the Palestinian families threatened with expulsion from Sheikh Jarrah.

The family's lawyer rejects Israel's claim to the property, but he hopes a deal can still be found. "The main goal of Palestinian families is to maintain and secure their presence in their homes," Sami Irshad told the BBC. "So if a resolution is going to come from the courts, maybe not a full declaration of Palestinian rights, it could at least be something that is satisfactory to Palestinian families." The court postponed the decision in an attempt to bridge the positions of the two camps. The judge asked Palestine to present a list of potential tenants protected.
